Miller likely experienced intense pressure to focus on the positive aspects of life. This account depicts Hudson Taylor as moving through a series of victories in his faith, constantly singing praises, always in high spirits, filled with a strong desire, passion, and zeal, with his faith and belief never faltering.

The story barely mentions the sorrows Taylor faced, quickly moving past his losses: after the death of his first wife and his son, he experienced a profound joy that was beyond understanding, and saw these hardships as stepping stones to greater successes. The Taylor that comes out of this story appears almost inhuman.

It's easy to leave this narrative with the mistaken belief that it's not spiritual for Christians to feel sad or to struggle with their faith. Fortunately, we don't have to adhere to this standard.

Christ, our true role model, was portrayed as someone who experienced sorrow and was familiar with grief, and His prayers in the garden before His crucifixion show deep human feelings of fear and doubt.
