MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN YOUR COMMUNITY

“We are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works. ...” (Ephesians 2: 10)

William Wilberforce lived in England two hundred years ago.  He led the campaign to end the British slave trade forever changing his society.  When he was young, he struggled with the question, “What should I do with my life?”  He was set on pursuing a successful career in politics. A wealthy and popular young man, he enjoyed life to the fullest – dinners, balls, and roguish activities with friends. But after he became a Christian and accepted Jesus, his world view radically changed.  He found himself questioning as to how he should spend the remainder of his life, using his time and talents.  At first he thought he might be called to be a clergyman, but a good minister friend, John Newton, saw that Wilberforce had tremendous gifts and talents in the area of politics.  He advised him to use his public life to shape the hearts of the British people.  Realizing that the opportunities before him were divinely orchestrated, Wilberforce continued as a member of parliament, and God used him to abolish slavery in Great Britain, and to bring about dramatic changes in the culture of England.  His concern for others, whether stranger or neighbor, slave or free, came from his Biblical world view.

Dear friends, not all of us will be called to the public life as Wilberforce was, but we all are given specific roles by our Heavenly Father through which He expects us to make our society a better one.  Let us pause for a few minutes and examine what natural skills we have and how we can use them to help others. Let us make use of these God-given talents and make a difference in our community, in our church, and in our neighborhood, in as many ways as possible.

PRAYER: Dear God, I am an ordinary person. But I offer myself to Your service. I dedicate my skills and talents for your perusal. Use me as You used Gideon the weakling and Moses the stammerer mightily. Let me make a difference in my church and my community in a special way. Amen.
