GOD’S DELAYS ARE NOT HIS DENIALS
“How long, O Lord, must I call for help, but you do not listen?” - Habakkuk 1: 2
Habakkuk begins his message with a prayer - cry to the Lord. Here the word, “cry” means “to scream,” to cry out with a loud voice, to cry with a disturbed heart. Like Jeremiah, the weeping prophet, Habakkuk was deeply stirred because of the sin of the people of God. He began his prayer with, “How long, O Lord?” It is the heart cry of the saints of God in all generations. Habakkuk cried, and there seemed to be no answer. Heaven was silent.
Wickedness and violence were evident on all sides. The law of God was forgotten, there was no more justice, the wicked oppressed the righteous. Habakkuk’s question was essentially the same as Job’s query. In Job 30:20, he cries, “I cry out to you, O God, but you do not answer; I stand up, but you merely look at me.” In essence, both asked, “God, if You are as good and just as we know You are, why don’t You do something?” Job wondered, why such tragedies had fallen upon him despite his righteous behavior, when others who blatantly ignored God’s righteous standard seemed to go free, whereas Habakkuk wondered, why God tolerated the injustice and wrong in the nation for long. God appeared to be an inactive and indifferent spectator.
Dear friends, every believer faces a similar problem. We are in distress and we cry out to God, “How long, God?” and yet there is no apparent response from God. To be sure, the silence of God is difficult to understand. But divine silence is definitely not divine indifference, or in other words, delay is not always denial. Far from being an unconcerned spectator, God is intimately and powerfully working out His plans which are never too early, never too late, and never an error.
PRAYER: Dear Lord, I have been crying in my distress, “How long?” I have been waiting for an answer for a long time, but You seem to be silent. Yet I do not lose hope, for Your delays are not denials. You will fulfill Your plan for me at the right time, which will be always the best for me. Amen.
