LOVE AS JESUS LOVED
“If you really keep the royal law found in the Scripture, “love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing right.” - James 2: 8
When one of the teachers of the law asked Jesus as to which was the most important of all the commandments, He replied, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength,’ and ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” (Mark 12: 28-31) All of us want to love God passionately, but do we yearn to love our fellow beings as well? I John 4: 20 says, “For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen.” I John 2: 9 says, “Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates his brother is still in darkness.” How many times have we talked ill of our brothers and sisters, our colleagues and neighbors behind their back? Don’t we find it totally impossible to love those who have mistreated or abused us? But our Lord Jesus says in Luke 6: 35, “Love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back.” And in Luke 6: 32 He says, “If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them.” When we love our enemies, we become sons of the Most High. Our Father will certainly reward us.
So dear friends, let our love be unconditional. Our Lord Jesus not only preached on love and forgiveness, but He set us an example by forgiving all His enemies – all those who nailed Him on the Cross. Let us also forgive our oppressors and our opponents. We cannot do it with our own strength. Let us ask God to enable us to love, forgive and accept everyone. PRAYER: Heavenly Father, loving my neighbor as myself seems to be a difficult task to me, especially when they provoke me and mistreat me. Lord, give me Your strength not to quit but keep on loving them even if I fail in my attempts. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
