REDEEM THE TIME! IT IS FLEETING BY!

Be very careful, then, how you live - ... making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. - Ephesians 5: 15, 16

The word “opportunity” is derived from the Latin word, “ob portu.” In ancient times, before modern harbors, ships had to wait for the timing of the tide before they could make it safely to the port. Thus “ob portu” described the ship waiting “for port,” ready to seize the crucial moment when it could rise up the tide into safe harbor. The captain knew that if he missed the passing tide, the ship would have to wait for another tide to come in. God gives us many opportunities - “ob portu’s,” but we must be spiritually wise and be led by the Holy Spirit, in order to see and seize them. The 16th century reformer Philip Melanchthon kept a record of every wasted moment and took his list to God in confession at the end of each day. Little wonder that God used him in such mighty ways.

Dear friends, it is too late to redeem the time that has passed.  We can always make more money, but we cannot make more time.  Once it is gone, it is gone forever.  The opportunity of a lifetime may never come again.  The days are evil, the opposition is great.  Paul is encouraging us in today’s text to keep our lives uncluttered so that we are prepared to respond when the need arises.  We as children of God have openings for ministry that often come at our “inconvenient times” - a friend who needs a counsel, a chance to lend a hand to someone in need.  Let us not be so task oriented that we miss the kingdom tasks.  May the Spirit give us all “kingdom vision.”  Let us make best use of the opportunities that come our way.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, the time is fleeting. Time that is past I can never recall. So help me to redeem the time. Let me look for kingdom opportunities and do my very best, even if it causes me inconveniences amidst my busy schedule. Let me not waste a single moment but use it for Your glory. Amen.
