These words were spoken in Isaiah 45 by the Lord to Cyrus, king of Persia. Cyrus, though a heathen king, was an instrument chosen of God to do an appointed work, which was to overthrow the great Babylonian empire, take the city of Babylon and restore the children of Israel, who were exiled there, to their own land. This was a great work for Cyrus to execute, so great that he could not have performed it unless he had been specially aided by God, for the city was well manned and well provisioned, and altogether so strong and powerful as to defy any mode of attack then known. If the Lord had not gone before him, if He had not broken down the gates of bronze and cut through the bars of iron, Cyrus could never have taken that mighty city, but must have been utterly defeated in his attempt.
Dear friends, though this promise was given to Cyrus, these words are applicable to us even today. What a great encouragement it is to know that we serve a God who will make the crooked places straight, the rough places smooth and level the exalted places. Having that kind of strength and power before us, behind us and within us gives us a huge comfort. Whatever crooked or rough places we may face in this year, however strong bars and gates are before us obstructing our way, let us not be afraid, as our God is on our side. Let us look to the face of God. He has promised to lead us down a path that will grant us the greatest possible success. Amen. PRAYER: Dear Lord, You will go before me - You will be my leader and guide, You will make the crooked path straight - You will make the road easier for me to march forward, You will break the gates and cut the bars of iron - You will fight my battles. Help me to claim these promises and make a reality in this 2025. Amen.
