“If my people, … humble themselves and pray … then I will hear from heaven and I will forgive their sin ...” - 2 Chronicles 7:14
On September 29, 1904, a young Welshman Evan Roberts and his 19 friends went to hear an evangelist named Seth Joshua in a nearby town. Joshua prayed, “Bend us, O Lord, bend us.” The Holy Spirit did a deep work in young Roberts’ heart. “I fell on my knees with my arms over the seat in front of me and tears flowed freely. I cried, “Bend me, bend me, bend me, O Lord.“ Evan Roberts was a broken man. He soon brought a message that would ultimately shake the nation. The message became known as the Four Points which said,
“1) Is there any sin in your past that you have not confessed to God? On your knees to God!
2) Is there anything in your life that is doubtful? Away with it!
3) Do what the Spirit prompts you to do.
4) Publicly confess Christ as your Savior.”
The results were amazing. Within a year, there were more than 100,000 conversions to Christ. The Liverpool Daily Post reported in 1904 that there had been no arrests for drunkenness in Rhos since the revival started. Outstanding debts were being paid by thousands of young converts. Restitution was the order of the day. How did this revival begin? Only by Evan Roberts’ brokenness and his prayer of humility – “Bend me, O Lord!”
Dear friends, “Humility is a fertile field for the seeds of a great awakening,” writes Sammy Tippit. True humility is derived from knowledge of God. The more we get to know Him, the more we are broken of pride and self centeredness. Amen.
PRAYER: Almighty God, break me, melt me and bend me. Take away my pride and haughtiness. Help me to acknowledge your greatness and realize how insignificant I am in your eyes. Give me the humility to serve you and other fellow believers. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
