Read: II Kings 19:9-19, 35
“... All the kingdoms of the earth may know that You alone, Lord, are God.” - II Kings 19:19
The king of Assyria sent his supreme commander Sennacherib with a large army against Hezekiah, the king of Judah. When Hezekiah heard this, his heart melted with fear. For Sennacherib had already crushed forty six towns in Judah and carried off tens of thousands of captives. He had also invaded Samaria, taking its people as captives. Not only that, Sennacherib had sent a letter to Hezekiah, “Say to Hezekiah, the king of Judah: Do not let the God you depend on deceive you when He says, “Jerusalem will not be handed over to the king of Assyria.” Hezekiah hurried to the temple, prostrated himself before the Lord and spreading the letter he cried, “Give ear, O Lord, and hear; open Your eyes, O Lord, and see; listen to the words Sennacherib has sent to insult the living God.” Hezekiah knew that God Himself - the One who had fashioned both heaven and earth - would determine the fate of his nation. What was the result? The living God heard the sincere prayer of Hezekiah and sent His angel that night, and put to death a hundred and eighty five thousand men in the Assyrian camp!
Dear friends, we all have enemies with whom we have to contend, though quite often these enemies come from inside rather than outside. We have trouble controlling our anger. We give into fear and anxiety and doubt. Each one of us can think of many such things that loom so large, and we even assume that it is beyond God’s power to deliver us. Let us stop believing such lies, and spread out every problem before God as Hezekiah did. Our God is a living God. He sees us, hears us and delivers us. PRAYER: Dear Lord, though my enemy is strong, You are stronger still. You are the Living God who loves me - who sees me, who hears me and who always acts to save me. Deliver me from my problem that I may bring glory to Your name. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
