Wednesday, April 09 || LET US NOT FAST TO MAN, BUT TO GOD!

“... On that day they fasted and there they confessed, “We have sinned against the Lord.”- I Samuel 7: 6
Fasting is occasional abstinence from food in order to bring the body into the subjection to the spirit. Often God’s people have fasted in order to express humility before the Lord, and to show an earnest desire for the Lord to work in their lives in particular ways. Jesus gives us here certain principles for fasting. First He says, “Don’t fast like a hypocrite, putting on a gloomy face to impress men. If you do so, you have received your entire reward! If you fast for the admiration of men, be certain of this - you will lose the smile and reward of your Father! When you fast take care of your appearance so men don’t know you are fasting - then your Father will reward you.” Fasting in Scripture is always associated with prayer. We should not however assume that fasting is like a “spiritual hunger strike” that compels or manipulates God in some ways. Clearly, if we petition for something out of God’s will, our fasting and prayer will not yield an affirmative response from God. Fasting is associated with confession and repentance. In I Samuel 7: 1-17, we read of a national revival in Israel in which God raised up Samuel to call the people to repentance and confession. Intercession was made through the blood of a lamb and there was victory over the Philistines.
Dear friends, let not our fasting become a lifeless routine. Let us remember that fasting without a changed heart is a meaningless dead work.
PRAYER: Dear Lord, when I fast let me keep my focus on You and Your will for me. Let me fast in secret and not observe it as a show for other people. Let my fasting be accompanied by earnest prayer with confession and repentance, and an eagerness to draw closer to You. Amen.
