HOW DO WE RESPOND WHEN TROUBLES HIT US?

“Then Moses cried out to the Lord, “What am I to do with these people? They are almost ready to stone me.” - Exodus 17: 4

When the Israelites camped at Rephidim, there was no water for them to drink.  So they quarreled with Moses and grumbled against him.  So how did Moses respond?  He chose to cry out to the Lord and not to contend with the Israelites, which would have been the temptation of a worldly man.  A carnal minded man would have yelled, “Shut your mouths, you ungrateful people!”  But Moses did not do so.  Moses also had some trusted men, the elders of Israel, to whom he could have gone for counsel.  But he went first to the Lord.  Moses had just as much
reason to be tempted to distrust God as the Israelites did.  But his response was prayer.  Whenever he was confronted with difficult obstacles and challenges, Moses turned to the Lord and asked for guidance.  This is the pattern we should imitate when unexpected trouble comes - go to the Lord first.  Let us remember, the Lord will not allow anything in our life that we cannot handle.  “When God permits His children to go through the furnace of affliction, He keeps His eye on the clock and His hand on the thermostat,” writes Warren Wiersbe.  Sometimes we can see neither sun nor stars, and storm seems severe.  Remember - others’ counsel would not be right, our past experiences would give us no  light.  Only a single counsel is left.  We must stay upon the Lord.  We must holdfast our confidence in God’s faithfulness and His everlasting love

Dear friends, do we go to the Lord first when trouble knocks at our door? We need to remember the promise of our Lord, “Surely I am with you always, to the very end of age.” It was undoubtedly this assurance that gave Moses the strength and confidence to lead a rebellious people during the wilderness wandering.

PRAYER:  Dear Lord, when confronted with an obstacle, difficulty or problem, help me to practice the ‘Moses Method.’  Let my reflex action be to ‘take it to the Lord in prayer!’  People may treat me with contempt, they may desert me, but let me remember that You are in control, and hold on to You, the Hearer of my prayer.  Amen.
