JOB, AN EXAMPLE FOR US TO FOLLOW

“In everything set them an example by doing what is good. ...“ (Titus 2: 7)

Job longed not only for the days before he lost his children, his health and wealth, he especially longed for those days in which he sensed God’s presence more. Job fondly remembered the days when it seemed that God was for him rather than against him. So we understand that Job’s great crisis after his losses was primarily spiritual. Spurgeon describes the ways that Job sensed this great loss from God as follows -

“In everything set them an example by doing what is good. ...“ (Titus 2: 7)

Firstly, he had lost the consciousness of divine preservation. In Job 29:2, he said, “How I long for the months gone by, for the days when God watched over me.”

Second, Job had also lost divine consolation. He recollected in verse 3, of God’s lamp that shone upon his head, which gave him comfort.

Third, Job had lost divine illumination. He said that by God’s light he walked through darkness, and so he never was perplexed by life’s problems.

Fourth, Job had lost divine communion. In verse 4 he said, because of God’s intimate fellowship, his house was blessed.

Job remembered how greatly he was respected and esteemed in his community. He was a man honored for his wise words. It was not ambition or popularity, or self-interest that led Job to do good deeds to his fellow human beings, but the care and pure love he had on them in executing justice and mercy. Though Job was a man of great wealth and influence, he used them to do good, instead of simply being greedy and selfish. Dear friends, Job is a tremendous example of how a wealthy and a powerful man should live his life, not in selfish indulgence, but in care and concern for the less fortunate.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, let me yearn for Your presence more than anything else. Help me to love, care and seek the best for the higher good of everyone. Give me the strength to do good, expecting nothing in return. Let me follow the example of Job, and let me be a channel of Your goodness to many. Amen.
