Tuesday, January 07 || JOSHUA LEARNT FROM MOSES TO TRUST GOD

"Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write this on the scroll … and make sure that Joshua hears it, ..." - Exodus 17:14

Joshua means “Jehovah is salvation.”  During his years of close association with Moses, Joshua learnt many valuable things from him which made him to be a great leader of the Israelites later.  One of the most precious qualities that he learnt and then cultivated from Moses was “trusting God.”  He saw with his own eyes how  Moses trusted God for every single matter and how he obeyed  His instructions.  Joshua also witnessed how Moses was honored by the Lord for his commitment.

In Exodus 17, we read about the first war  the Israelites had to fight after they came out of Egypt.  In Egypt they had lived as slaves all their lives. They were not accustomed to wars or battles of any sort as long they lived there. But when at Rephidim they had to face the Amalekites who came to attack them, Moses commanded Joshua to go and fight against the Amalekites.  “And I will stand on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hands,” he said.  In verse 10 we read, “So Joshua fought the Amalekites as Moses had ordered,” and verse 13 says, “Joshua overcame the Amalekite army with the sword.“ Though Joshua never knew what actually was happening on top of the hill, he must have had the assurance that Moses would be interceding for him and for the whole army, and that the Lord would surely answer Moses’ prayer and give them victory.  This trust and confidence strengthened Joshua’s morale and this led him to win the battle. Even many years later, after the death of Moses, Joshua passed through difficult paths and came out victoriously because he practically applied the lesson of “trusting and obeying” God which he had learnt from Moses.

Dear friends, let us learn this remarkable quality, put it into practice and become mature Christians.
PRAYER: Dear Lord, when you commanded Joshua to cross the river Jordan, to go around the city of Jericho seven times, never did he question You.  But he put into practice the lesson “trusting and obeying” which he learnt from Moses. Let his life be an example to me. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
