Read : Habakkuk 3: 16-19
“Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior.” - Habakkuk 3: 18
The Book of Habakkuk begins with all of its questions and doubts - but it ends in a song of praise and faith - God showed Habakkuk a vision of the destruction that was coming on the land of Judah, the invasion of the cruel Babylonians. God showed him what the land would look like after Babylonians had left. And we read in verse 16, the four fold description of the anxiety Habakkuk felt at the judgment that was coming on the land. He wrote,
1) my heart pounded,
2) my lips quivered,
3) decay crept into my bones,
4) my legs trembled.
Every single part of his body was affected and shaken by what he knew was going to happen. But then in verse 18, Habakkuk makes the most important statement, “Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Saviour.” That word “Yet” is one of those little words that make a big difference! It is like Job when in his trial said, “Though He slay me, YET will I hope in Him.” (Job 13: 15) In the same way, despite all circumstances he faced, and everything that was going to happen, Habakkuk says, “I will rejoice in the Lord.” The question is, “How could he sing a song in the night?” The answer is, “Because his joy was not in his circumstances, but in his God.” The land of Judah was about to become a land of darkness. But like the nightingale, Habakkuk had a song in the night and that song came from his relationship with God.
Dear friends, we too can sing songs in the dark days of our lives if we like Habakkuk learn to rejoice in God Himself more than in temporal pleasures. The Lord alone is eternal and in Him alone is lasting joy. He will lift us above all circumstances and help us to sing even in the most heart rending hours.
PRAYER: Dear Lord, when I face dark hours in my life, let me not despair. Let me not turn my back on You. But let me have the confidence that even when all else fail, You are with me. You fill my heart with gladness and I can still sing a song in the night. I rejoice because eternal blessings are waiting for me. Amen. Honey Drops || Daily Devotion
