Read: Psalm 100: 1-5
“Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise, give thanks to Him and praise His name.” - Psalm 100: 4
Thanksgiving should permeate the lives and worship of every Christian. Spurgeon said, “Thanksgiving is like the incense of the temple, which filled the whole house with its fragrance.” The Hebrew word for “thanks” is “towdah,” which means to give praise or sing hymns of worship to God. Many times we come to God with our own agenda. We place our requests to Him, plead with Him to solve our problems, sometimes we even enter His gates demanding. Instead, the psalmist invites us here to have a deeper intimacy with God and connect with Him in a more meaningful way. As we give thanks to God, our hearts are lifted with joy. It can be hard to do so at difficult times, but giving praise to God is the best way to knit our hearts closer to Him.
Thanksgiving is not only about what God does for us, but all God is for us. There are lots of things God does for us. Let us take time and think of the physical blessings God has given us - food on our tables, roof over our heads, family, jobs, and also the spiritual blessings - the forgiveness of sins, His written Word, His Church, the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Let us think of how we do not deserve forgiveness - we deserve to be cast into hell - but God’s mercy, His unlimited favor, which we do not deserve has saved us from condemnation. Let us join with the psalmist and proclaim in awe, “Who am I, Lord, that You are mindful of me? (Psalm 8: 4)
Dear friends, on the last day of the year, let us with humbleness come to His presence with hearts full of gratitude and give Him the praises and honor He deserves. Let us enter His gates with shouts of praises.
PRAYER: Dear Lord, my heart is filled with joy and gratitude as I look back this year. You are the One who made me and I am yours. You never leave me. Your love and faithfulness are unchangeable and eternal. I come into Your presence with admiration and adoration for all You are and all You have done for me. Amen.
