Tuesday, April 29 || KILL YOUR GREED BEFORE IT KILLS

Read : Matthew 19: 16-22

“... Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.” - Luke 12:15

Here, Jesus warns us against greed. Sadly, our world today revolves around accumulation of money and more money. There is a thin line between “saving enough money to live a happy life” and “an obsession to build up a storehouse of wealth.” A greedy person is never satisfied. Greedy people measure life's worth and value by the abundance of possessions. Jesus is not saying it is wrong to have riches. We all know that a certain amount of material goods is necessary for life. What Jesus is saying is that a greater abundance of goods does not mean a greater abundance of life. They are not directly proportional. If more money does not mean more abundant life, then what else does? Jesus tells us in verse 21 that it is more important to be "rich toward God" than to be rich in earthly things.

What does it mean to be rich towards God?

Firstly, we are rich towards God if we use and enjoy riches the way God intends.
Secondly, if we share with the needy, support the causes of the Church and the Kingdom, and recognize that what we have belongs to God.
Thirdly, if our first goal in life is to pursue God rather than amass earthly treasure.
Fourthly, if our relationship with Him counts more than our pleasure and enjoyment.
Fifthly, if prayer and Bible reading and church work is not neglected for the sake of work and self.

Dear friends, if we kill our greed, and seek to become rich towards God, then we will surely enjoy abundance in life. Let us learn to be content with the earthly treasure we have, but intently check our richness towards God often.

PRAYER: Almighty God, thank You for all the riches You have given me - The riches in Jesus Christ, the riches of the heavenlies. Thank You for opening my eyes to know that I need to grow richer towards God and godly things, rather than towards earthly possessions. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
