Tuesday, April 15 || CAIAPHAS MISSED THE TRUTH

“... I charge you under oath by the living God: tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God.” - Matthew 26: 63

When word spread that Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, the Sanhedrin met to consider how to handle the matter.  They could not deny that Jesus had raised Lazarus, for they knew that he was dead but now he was alive.  They were afraid that soon everyone would believe in Jesus  and follow Him.  That’s when Caiaphas said, “It is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation should perish.”  He spoke the truth unknowingly and prophesied what Christ would accomplish by His death, how His death would provide salvation for everyone who believes in Him.  Caiaphas was so close to the truth,  so close but not close enough.  He was a religious leader who ought to have known that everything in the Old Testament pointed to Christ.  He was so blinded by his hatred toward Christ that he could not see who He really was.  He thought he was doing what Moses would have done - he thought he was following the law of God.  In sending Christ away to be crucified, Caiaphas thought he was doing God’s will.  As the chief of religious leader of the Jews, he was “the blind leading the blind!”  What a pity!

Dear friends, let us not think that we are immune to the same mistake that Caiaphas made.  On that fateful night in Jerusalem Caiaphas could have known the truth, because the Truth Himself was standing right in front of him.  In our zeal to serve God, let us not end up opposing Him without knowing what we are doing.  Let us fall at the feet of the Lord, admit our weakness and pray for true enlightenment that comes from the Holy Spirit.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, how sad it is that Caiaphas asked the right question but when was told the right answer, he did not believe!  He was so close to the Truth but he missed Him badly.  Forgive me if I have opposed You by word or deed. Holy Spirit, search me and reveal to me my sin of rebellion.   Amen.
