ADULTERY - ABOMINABLE IN GOD’S SIGHT
“Flee from sexual immorality. ...” (I Corinthians 6:18)
The eighth of the Ten Commandments says, “Thou shalt not commit adultery.” (Exodus 20:14) Since marriage is the most basic of all human relationships from which all others - the family, the church and the community are built up, Satan often tries to attack this for which he devises cunningly many schemes - one of which is instigating the couple to be unfaithful to each other. In His Sermon on the Mount, Jesus said, “You have heard that it was said, “Do not commit adultery.” But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”(Matthew 5:27-28) Adultery is a deadly sin that makes a man a slave to it. Lustful thoughts, adultery, and sexual immorality come out of one’s heart and so the person as a whole, his body, soul and spirit - all become corrupted by sin. In I Corinthians 6:18 Paul said, “All other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body.“ Not only is adultery a sin against the individual, but it is primarily a sin against God. Paul said in I Corinthians 6:13-15, “The body is not meant for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. ... Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute?”
Dear friends, let us not compromise according to the standards of the world. Let us guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. In the Old Testament period, two sins for which no sacrifice and no forgiveness was stipulated were murder and adultery. The penalty was death. But the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from all our sins. So let us confess the sins that we have done in the past and plead for His mercy. PRAYER: Dear Lord, You loved David so much. Yet when he committed adultery with Bathsheba and later murdered her husband Uriah, You punished him severely. Let me not in any way do such thing which displeases You. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
