LISTEN! PAY CLOSE ATTENTION! GOD IS SPEAKING!
“Then Jesus said, “ He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” - Mark 4:9
Everyone has ears! But Jesus here is not speaking solely of physical ears, He means spiritual ears. He spoke of a deeper kind of hearing, not hearing with ears but with the mind and heart. The simplest way to receive the Word is to hear it. “Faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the Word of Christ.” (Romans 10:17) Matthew 13:3-23 lists four kinds of hearers of the Word - first, the apathetic hearer, who hears the Word, but is not prepared to receive and understand it (verse 19); second, the superficial hearer, who receives the Word temporarily, but not let it take root in the heart; third, the preoccupied hearer, who receives the Word temporarily, but lets the worries of this world and the desire for other things choke it out (verse 22); and fourth, the reproducing hearer, who receives the Word, understands it, bears fruit and brings forth results (verse 23).
It is said that John Burroughs, the naturalist, could walk along a noisy street and overhear a cricket in the hedge. His ear was tuned to the little voice of the nature.
Dear friends, how about us? Are our ears tuned to hear God’s voice? Whenever Jesus says, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear,” He is calling people to pay careful heed. It is another way of saying, “Listen! Pay close attention!” Let us be like little Samuel. Let us ask God, “Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening!” (I Samuel 3:10) God has much to say. Let us not turn away our ear from Him.
PRAYER: Dear Lord, let me be keen to hear Your voice. Let me not be an apathetic hearer, but a reproducing hearer, who hears Your Word, puts it to practice and bears much fruit for You. Let me be spiritually alert and pay close attention to what You say. Amen.
