TAME YOUR TONGUE
“Set a guard over my mouth, O Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips.” - Psalm 141: 3
The more a person talks, the more he is likely to commit sin. Proverbs 10: 19 says, “When words are many, sin is not absent, but he who holds his tongue is wise.” Proverbs 21: 23 says, “He who guards his mouth and his tongue keeps himself from calamity.” It is of the utmost importance that we should guard our tongue. James says, “The tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts.” He compares the tongue to the rudder of the ship. Although ships are large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered and controlled by a small rudder. Likewise, the tongue, a small organ of the body, either builds up a man or destroys him and governs his destiny. A spark of fire destroys a big forest, and likewise, unwanted words damage a man’s character. So as James says, “Everyone should be quick to listen and slow to speak.” Paul says, “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” (Ephesians 4: 29) In Ephesians 5: 4 he says that there must not be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking.
Many Christians talk worthless things, as a result of which they lose their witness. In Matthew 12: 36, Jesus says, “Men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.” So let us be careful. Let us not speak unnecessary words. Let us make a decision today that we will not speak unnecessary things, but only things that edify us and others. PRAYER: Dear Lord, You have created the tongue as a small organ of my body. Help me to use my tongue to praise You, and to talk words that edify others. Let me not say things that would damage the character of others. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
