AM I A FRUITFUL VINEYARD?

“As God’s fellow workers we urge you not to receive God’s grace in vain.”

- II Corinthians 6:1

This Song of the Vineyard pictures a Vineyard planted on excellent soil with day long sunlight.  The farmers did everything to make it produce fruit.  However, instead of yielding edible grapes, it produced sour grapes.  The vine mentioned here symbolises the nation of Israel.  After all the care He had lavished upon Israel, His loving provision for their needs, His gracious forgiveness extended to them over and over again, they failed to produce good fruits of righteousness and justice.  He had made trenches and watered, He cleaned it of stones that hindered its fruitfulness.  He built a tower of His protection.  How eagerly He had looked that it would bring forth choicest grapes!  The pity of it is that there had been nothing but wild growth of useless grapes.

Dear friends, how much is our condition like that of Israel!  God has given us as believers everything necessary for life and godliness.  He has given us His Word and the ministry of the gospel.  He comes down the garden often seeking from us the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5: 22,23), the grace of prayer, supplication and thanksgiving, the plant of His delight.  “Let us go early to the vineyards.” He says, “to see if the vines have budded, if their blossoms have opened, and if the pomegranates are in bloom.”  (Songs 7:12) But He is disappointed and grieved that we are unproductive and unprofitable.  Let us do a personal inventory, inspecting our life!  Let us confess our empty excuses for failing to bring forth fruit.

PRAYER:  Dear Lord, I have been blessed by You with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ.  Yet, instead of the harvest You expected - obedience, thanksgiving, prayer, worship, I am ashamed to say that I produce foul-smelling wild grapes of disobedience, rebellion, idolatry.  Let not Your wrath fall on me.  Have mercy on me and forgive me. Amen.
