Read: Psalm 91: 1-16
“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.”
- Psalm 91: 1
G. Campbell Morgan called Psalm 91, “one of the greatest possessions of the saints.” It is true because it has helped countless thousands live courageously for the Lord, through war, disease, persecution and all kinds of trouble. This psalm presents the magnificent benefits that belong to those who trust in God. In verses 1-3, we see God’s character displayed in His names. First, the word “Most High” in Hebrew is Elyon, meaning the Possessor of heaven and earth. Second, the word “Almighty” in Hebrew is Shaddai. It denotes God who is great in grace, God who is bountiful in all our needs, that we shall not need or lack anything. In verse 2, we read the next name “LORD.” It is the name Yahweh or Jehovah, the covenant keeping God, the eternal unchangeable I AM - the One who was, is, and ever shall be. And finally, “God” - Elohim, the Creator God who created the heaven and the earth, and everything in it.
The use of the names “Most High” and “Almighty” is a double reinforcement of God’s protection. “Most High” speaks of God as a high tower - a place that is inaccessible to any enemy. The one dwells in the Most High will feel safe from all harm. “Almighty” speaks of the tender hearted mother and reminds of God’s care for us as a mother for her own. Dear friends, doesn’t this opening verse present a very comforting picture to us who are in the beginning of this New Year? Like the psalmist, let us say with confidence, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in Him I will trust,” and let us abide, dwell and remain in the shelter of our Almighty. Then without any doubt we will be protected from the traps of the enemy.
PRAYER: Dear Lord, I thank You that You are my refuge. Help me to dwell, abide and remain under Your shadow, beneath Your wing and stay under the shelter of Your truth which is a strong shield. Let me be confident that no enemy can touch me there and rest secure all the days of my life. Amen.
