Read: Acts 13: 44-49
“Go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father ... Son and ... Holy Spirit.” - Matthew 28: 19
We should remember that Christianity without mission is no longer Christianity. The uniqueness of Christ gives Him universal significance. So He MUST be made known throughout the world. More than that, Christian mission is rooted in the nature of God Himself. The Bible reveals Him as missionary God – the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, who creates a missionary people and is working towards missionary consummation. In the Old Testament, we see God the Father, the Creator of the world, as the “Father of us all.” Secondly, in the Gospels we see our Lord Jesus Christ as the Savior of sinners. Though the earthly ministry of Jesus had limitations and was restricted only to “Israel’s lost sheep,” Jesus said that through His death, resurrection and gift of the Holy Spirit, salvation would be offered to all the nations. The followers of Jesus are therefore to go and make disciples of all nations, calling them to the Christian community through baptism and teaching them to obey all their Master’s instructions. (Matthew 28: 19, 20) Thirdly, in the book of Acts we see the Holy Spirit at work in and through the apostles. Roland Allen writes: “The book of Acts is strictly a missionary book. It is in the revelation of the Holy Spirit as a missionary ‘Spirit’ that the “Acts” stands alone in the New Testament.” Fourthly, the letters of Paul to the churches depict living and witnessing responsibility in the world. And fifthly, Revelation says, the redeemed people of God will be gathered from all nations.
So Dear friends, let us not be indifferent to mission or resist it, but obey the Great Commission God has given us.PRAYER: Dear God, I understand that mission arises from Your very own heart and is communicated from Your heart to ours. Let me not resist it or become pre-occupied with other worldly concerns, but let me do Your work with diligence and sincerity. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
