AFTER SPIRITUAL VICTORY, BEWARE OF SPIRITUAL ATTACKS
“Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have. ...”
- Hebrews 13: 5
When Abraham heard that Lot was taken captive, he took 318 of his men, went in pursuit of those five kings, defeated them and brought back Lot and his possessions. As Abraham was returning after defeating the enemies, the king of Sodom met him on the way and said, “Give me the people and keep the goods for yourself.” Abraham rendered a great service to the king of Sodom in the victory he had gained over the five kings, even though he fought the battle not on his behalf, but for the sake of Lot. To an ordinary person, it would have seemed natural and quite harmless to receive from the king a gift of material things which he had rescued. But Abraham, a man of faith, saw beyond the immediate. He saw what this might lead to in future, and refused to put himself in any way under obligation to this pagan king, who might at some period later take advantage of his action in such a way to bring discredit upon the Most High God. (Genesis 14: 22) Moreover, Abraham had no need of such gift, nor was he impoverished by refusing them. The man who had the Lord as his shield and his very great reward, (Genesis 15: 1) needed no reward which the king of Sodom had to offer. If Abraham had yielded to the king of Sodom’s request, he would have lost his testimony as well. The people would have said, “Abraham rescued Lot for what he could get out of it, not because of the faith and love.”
Dear friends, we must imitate Abraham and be on high alert after we have experienced a spiritual victory. It is at those times that the enemy will often come slyly to seduce us. Let us be watchful after the victory as before the battle.
PRAYER: Dear Lord, Abraham refused to take even a thread or a thong of sandal from the king of Sodom, who offered him many material gifts, because accepting them would have defiled Abraham’s godly walk. Let me give You the glory after the battle and beware of devil’s attacks. Amen.
