IS CHRIST THE FOUNDATION OF OUR LIFE?
“Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. ...”
- II Corinthians 13: 5)
Jesus draws a striking picture of the religion of a man who not only hears His Words, but also does His will. He compares him to one who built a house and laid a foundation on a rock.
A person who builds his house on a rock faces many pain, labor and self-denial. He goes to the trouble of digging deep into the soil. He anchors his foundation on the rock so that his house seats on a solid foundation. When the storm hits and the flood lashes that house, it stood firm because it was well built. Like the house built on the rock is the religion of a man who obeys God’s Word. The streams of affliction may beat violently upon it and the floods of persecution lash fiercely against it, but it will not give way. But what a mournful picture is the religion of a man who hears Christ’s sayings, but does not obey them. Jesus compares him to the house without a foundation built on sand. No one can detect the difference outwardly between these two persons. Both will profess the same faith. But in the day of affliction, the one who professes mere outward faith is sure to collapse. When storm and tempest beat on the house which has no foundation, the walls which looked well in sunshine and fair weather, will fall down. Great indeed will be the ruin!
Dear friends, what is the foundation on which we ourselves are building? Is our faith real, not merely a profession, but heartfelt trust in Christ? Do we have a relationship with Jesus that has changed our lives? The Lord wants us to examine the foundation of our life and what we are building our life upon day by day. Let us hear Christ’s voice and follow Him, that when the flood rises and streams beat over us, our house may stand and not fall.PRAYER: Dear Lord, let me not be a foolish person who builds his house on the sand. Let me not just profess the faith with my lips, but let my life, both public and private, be testimony of my religion. Let me not deceive myself. Let me not fail the test on the final day and ruin my soul. Amen.
