Sunday, January 19 || ARMOR OF GOD

“Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.” (Ephesians 6: 11)

In the Spiritual armor, Paul first mentions the belt of truth. The belt was used to hold the soldier’s clothing to his body from flapping about, allowing him freedom of movement. The sign of the Christian is the belt of truth. First, Christ Himself is the truth. Second, the Word of God is the truth. A believer is to put on Christ and the Word of God. He is sanctified by the Word of God. Next, Paul mentions the breastplate of righteousness. The breastplate was used to protect the heart. The sign of the Christian soldier is righteousness. Since the believer’s heart is focused upon Jesus and His righteousness, that focus needs to be protected. Thirdly, Paul mentions the sandals of the Gospel. The sandals were a sign of readiness – readiness to march and fight the battle. The sign of the Christian soldier is readiness – readiness to march and to bear witness to the Gospel. The fourth part of the armor is the shield of faith. The shield is held by the soldier to protect his body from the fiery darts of his enemy. The sign of the Christian believer is that of the shield of faith – faith in God.

Fifth is the helmet of salvation. The helmet covered the head of the soldier which was the core of a soldier’s power to wage war. The sign of a Christian soldier is the helmet of salvation. Unless a man has been saved, his mind cannot be protected from the fiery darts of temptation.

Finally mentioned is the sword of the Spirit. The sword was a weapon used for both defence and offence. The sign of the Christian soldier is his use of the Word of God which assures him victory always.

PRAYER:  Heavenly Father, thank You for giving me Your full armor to fight against the enemy – Satan. Help me to put on the full armor, piece by piece and be alert always. When the devil attacks me, let me defeat him by being strong in You and in Your mighty power. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen
