“What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul?” - Mark 8:36
In the parable mentioned in today’s text, we read about the rich man and Lazarus. Both of them died – First Lazarus and then the rich man. The interesting thing is that in Hades, the rich man prayed first for himself, and then for his brothers! And another thing is, he prayed to Abraham and not to the Lord! His prayer was a selfish one. He asked Abraham to allow Lazarus to bring him some comfort. Even a drop of water would be welcomed! What a change from his sumptuous feasts when slaves ran to do his bidding! And we read that Abraham gave two reasons why Lazarus could not bring the comfort that the rich man needed. The rich man had lived a luxurious life on earth, had experienced abundant temporal blessings and had received his reward. He had determined his own destiny by leaving God out of his life, and now nothing could be changed. Secondly, Lazarus could not leave his place and make even a short visit to the rich man because there was a great chasm between them.
Dear friends, let this parable bring us a message of caution. In the rich man’s lifetime, God had spoken to him in many ways. God had permitted him to have riches, yet he did not repent. He was familiar with the Old Testament Scriptures as were the other Jews, but his heart remained unbelieving and life did not change. The fact that Lazarus died first did not make him realize that one day he would also die; but even death at his very own doorstep did not melt his heart. Let us not be proud and arrogant but let us repent when God warns us. Let us remember that no chance would be given to anyone to repent or change in hell - the Hades!
PRAYER: Father, let me not put my trust in riches and boast on my achievements here on earth. Let me not close my eyes and my heart to Your Word and Your warnings. When you give me an opportunity to repent, let me not harden my heart to be condemned eternally. In Jesus’ name.I pray. Amen.
