Sunday, December 22 || ELIZABETH, THE MOTHER OF MESSIAH’S FORERUNNER

Read: Luke 1: 39-45

“... Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear!”

- Luke 1: 42

There is a certain uniqueness about Elizabeth. She is the only woman in the Bible to bear that name. She is the only woman in the Bible who is said to have been filled with the Holy Spirit (Luke 1:41) besides Mary, the mother of Jesus. Elizabeth was a true daughter of Aaron, and with her priestly husband Zechariah they must have had a holy and happy household. However, there was no child in their home and together they prayed. It was not a selfish prayer - not just a longing for offspring, and not simply a desire for an heir for Zechariah. It was doubtless a prayer for the blessing of the nation of Israel. Together they walked blamelessly before the Lord and together they continued to pray, and their prayer was answered in the birth of John.

During Elizabeth’s confinement, when her cousin Mary of Nazareth came to visit her, Elizabeth’s greeting to Mary is amazing!  She saluted Mary as “the mother of my Lord.”  Before even Mary told her that she had conceived, Elizabeth proclaimed the blessing to her, “Blessed is the child you will bear!” and even when Jesus was not yet born she called Him “my Lord.”  This indicates that Elizabeth had received a supernatural revelation ’that her relative’ Mary was pregnant with the Messiah!  Elizabeth was not only filled with Holy Spirit but here, she was inspired by the Spirit who had revealed to her that the baby in Mary’s womb was Jesus, the long awaited Messiah, whom she appropriately recognized as “my Lord.”  Dear friends, Elizabeth was a woman of faith,  who was filled with the Spirit and sensitive to His voice.  How good that we all could have the attitude of this godly woman Elizabeth!

PRAYER: Dear Lord, fill me with Your Holy Spirit. Let the words that come out of my mouth be words of blessing to others. Let me live righteously, be humble and submit to Your will like Elizabeth. I give You all the glory and honor. Amen.
