Some years ago, a church was visited by showers of a refreshing presence of the Lord. The whole countryside was stirred up for God. Dance halls and bars were emptied, while the altar was filled with young and old weeping their way to salvation. How did this revival blaze start? The members said, “Despite all our efforts, our church services continued to dwindle Sunday after Sunday until it seemed like we had to close. About this time, a middle-aged woman moved into town. Her faith was boundless. The sight of our unfilled pews, and our almost empty Sunday school left her dismayed. “God wants His house filled,” she said. “He wants men and women to be delivered from Satan’s power. We must devote ourselves to praying for them.” Encouraged by her insistent unfaltering faith, we set ourselves to praying. We began with eight earnest souls. Everyday we gave ourselves to prayer and we prayed unitedly. All talking was forbidden. Prayer became our business. We did not proclaim abroad what we were doing, but others attracted by our earnestness began to join us in prayer. Soon the attendance in church and Sunday school began to increase. The leadership of the Holy Spirit was acknowledged. Human leadership and self-assertion were discouraged. Our spirits were contrite and broken under the burden of prayer for lost souls. Soon our church became the Holy ground and the church services were crowded. A spirit of heaven-sent revival pervaded the whole town.
Dear friends, only prayer can move the hand of God and bring down revival in our churches. Shall we pray?PRAYER: Heavenly Father, pour in me the spirit of prayer and supplication. Let me pray consistently for my church that a mighty revival will take place and spread to the whole nation. Let a great revival occur in my days. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
