“May the favor of the Lord our God rest upon us; establish the work of our hands for us. ...” - Psalm 90: 17
Many people do not enjoy their work and wish they could do a greater work for God. Where does a great work for God begin? We know Stephen from the Book of Acts because he was the first martyr. But how did he become a great preacher filled by the Holy Spirit? His work was to serve tables and take care of the distribution of money and food to a group of Greek and Jewish widows in the early church. Not too many people would want to take on such a job. But it was Stephen’s willingness to do the humble and ordinary thing, that made it possible for him to become the great martyr. Stephen had not set his heart on doing miracles or becoming a great preacher, but on serving His Master faithfully. He would not have been willing to serve tables had he been ambitious to do a “great” work for God.
Elizabeth Elliot said once, “After my husband Jim Elliot died, I was on a jungle mission station with no other missionaries. Every day was packed with duties. I had a ten month old baby, I had a house to keep and language work to do. There were Indians I needed to serve in various ways - teaching, doing medical work, helping in the church and school. Work was a blessing, and I found rest and refreshment in actually doing the will of God.”
Dear friends, let us thank God for the work He has given us. Let us receive it as a gift from Him, and offer it back to Him as an offering. Let us be faithful in the work He has given and do everything heartily, not for men but for God.
PRAYER: Dear Lord, let me receive the work You have given me as a gift. Let me do it heartily and faithfully putting in my efforts. Let me do every work - even the mundane duties for You. When I am faithful in little jobs, You will exalt me for Your glory in due time. Amen.
