FAITH AND LOVE – TWO PILLARS
“We have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for all the saints.”
- Colossians 1: 4
Faith and love are the two great pillars of Christian life. In this verse, the faith that Paul speaks of is not the ordinary faith needed to live our life, nor is it the faith in oneself or others. But it is the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. What is there about Jesus Christ that makes faith in Him so superior? Jesus Christ is the Son of God and so He alone brings about the Father-Son relationship between God and man. What a great privilege it is for a believer to be called a child of God! This faith in Jesus Christ assures a person of God’s wonderful presence and His blessings. It means that God looks after a believer as a father looks after His child. It means that God helps and directs a believer through all the trials and temptations of life. It means that the believer has the very strength of God at his disposal as he faces life day after day.
The second quality, love, being spoken of here by Paul is not about natural love which all men have for each other. It is the great pillar of love which believers hold for each other. Why is the love of believers for one another greater than the natural love that men have for fellow men? Because the love of believers is based upon the love of Christ and the love of Jesus Christ is the summit of love. This is seen in His sacrificial death for men. No greater love could ever be demonstrated. Therefore, when a man gives his life to Christ, he is giving himself to love as Christ loved. He is proclaiming that he will love to the ultimate degree. Besides this, the love of a believer is stirred up by the Holy Spirit who lives within him and this is the supernatural love.
Dear friends, let us try at every moment to have these two great pillars in our Christian life.PRAYER: Dear Lord, help me to have these two great pillars, faith and love, in my Christian life. I find it difficult to put my faith in You when my situations are overwhelming, and I am unable to love fellow believers who are hard to love. Give me Your grace. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
