AWFULNESS OF SIN AND CERTAINTY OF JUDGEMENT
“Lot said to them, “No, my lords, please! ... I can’t flee to the mountains; ... I’ll die.”
- Genesis 19: 18, 19
Before God destroyed Sodom, He sent His angels to rescue Lot and his family. God did this, not because of the righteousness of Lot, but because of His compassion towards Abraham. Abraham had been interceding for Sodom in Genesis 18. And Genesis 19:29 says, “God remembered Abraham, and He brought Lot out of the catastrophe that overthrew the cities where Lot had lived.” When the angels had brought Lot’s family outside of Sodom, they asked them to flee to the mountains. But, notice the reply of Lot.
He said, “Oh, no, my lords! I have found favour in Your eyes, and You have spared my life, but I can’t flee to the mountains. Let me flee to this town here. Then my life will be spared.” Lot’s daring reply to God astounds us. He was not willing to accept God’s will for his life, but wanted to maintain his city lifestyle! He doubted God’s ability to preserve his life in fleeing to the mountains! Unbelievably, he had the nerve to ask God to send him to Zoar, which was also a sinful city as Sodom.
Dear friends, we see a downward spiral in Lot’s life. First, Lot hesitated to leave Sodom; then he argued with the angels, then he begged them to be allowed to go his own way. Instead of being grateful for God’s mercy and obeying His commands, Lot resisted God’s ways and His will. But how astonishing it is that God mercifully granted Lot his request! Indeed Lot was saved from physical death, but his life and his family’s lives were wasted from an eternal point of view, as Lot’s daughters, because of their sinful act, later became the mothers of Ammonites and Moabites, who were abominable to God. Lot is a warning to all believers, not to doubt, disobey or distrust God.
PRAYER: Dear Lord, all of the small compromises that Lot made with worldliness compounded and ended up his ultimate fall. Though he was a believer and had every opportunity to enjoy Your blessings, because of his sinful choices he had a tragic end. Let me be careful not to be tempted by the world and drift away from the heavenward vision. Amen.
