DON’T JUST TALK. SHOW IN DEEDS.
“Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?” - Luke 6:46
The common sin among Christians is profession of faith, but not practicing it. Jesus himself had many followers who pretended to honour Him by calling Him Lord, but yielded no obedience to His commandments. This existed even in the early church. Apostle James warned in James 1:22, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” Let us keep in our minds that the name of Christianity can profit us nothing, so long as we have sin in our hearts and live unchristian lives. Obedience to God and His Word is the only evidence of our faith, and that just the talks of the lips is useless if it is not accompanied by sanctification of the lips. Some may say, “I thought that faith, not obedience is the foundation of Christian life.” Jesus clearly says here that obedience to Him is not optional. It is part and parcel of the Christian life. Jesus shows in Matthew 7:21, the danger of false profesion. “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of My Father.” He goes on to cite examples of those who even have done impressive things in His name, but who will be rejected at the gate of heaven because they practiced lawlessness. Outwardly, these men would have seemed righteous, but God knew their selfish motives and evil thoughts.
Dear friends, we may say, “I am a Christian. Jesus is my God and Savior.” But Jesus is telling us, “Examine your heart! Do you really seek to obey me? Do you judge your sins in the light of My Word? Or are you deceiving yourself and justifying yourself saying, “Everyone does this.” Let us remember, obedience to Jesus is not optional, it is the true test of whether our faith in Christ is genuine or counterfeit. PRAYER: Dear Lord, when I am obedient to You, I show that I love You and have more faith in You than I do in myself. Let me not just say with my lips that Jesus is my Lord, but let me show in my life that I am a follower of Jesus by obeying Your commandments and living a witnessing life. Amen.
