DO NOT NEGLECT PRAYER
“Be ... faithful in prayer.” - Romans 12:12
In Acts 6:1-8, we have the record of how, long ago the apostles felt that they were slack in apostolic prayer because they had been burdened with certain duties which prevented them from spending more time in prayer. So they decided to put aside all hindrances and resolved to give themselves to prayer. They selected ordinary laymen who were “full of faith and the Holy Spirit,” who were religious, who could also serve the tables, take care of money matters, thus relieving the burden from the apostles who would be able to pray more.
Dear friends, we also find that some legitimate things - things which are commendable, which are right in themselves engross our attention, preoccupy our minds and cause us to neglect prayer. We tend to make prayer secondary. We become too busy to pray! How easy it is to slip away from our prayer closet! Even the apostles had to guard themselves at that point. How and when did the apostles realize their mistake? They began to hear complaints, see discontentment and divisions among the people whom they served, instead of finding gratitude, unity and peace. So they decided to place prayer prominently in the forefront. Let us remember that if we push aside prayer, we would end up in failure and dissatisfaction and all our service would be fruitless. So let us make a decision today not to get side tracked by any other worldly matters, but devote ourselves primarily to be alone in the presence of the Lord in earnest prayer. PRAYER: Dear Lord, when I am given new responsibilities I get engrossed too much in planning, execution, administration and finance, that I push aside the time of prayer to the back seat. Forgive me. Let me remember that prayerless life is a fruitless life. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
