Read: Psalm 146: 1-10
PRAISE THE LORD, O MY SOUL!
“Praise be to God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. ...” - Ephesians 1: 3
This psalm is the first of five psalms that bear the title, “Hallelujah Psalms.” Bible scholars say that these five psalms were probably written around the time Israel returned from captivity in Babylon. To commemorate the grace of God in bringing them back to their own land, these psalms were written to glorify the name of the Lord. Therefore, all five of these precious psalms begin and end with the phrase “Praise the Lord,” which in Hebrew is “Hallelujah.” In verses 1 and 2, the psalmist calls upon his soul to praise the Lord. As long as he has breath in his nostrils, he declares that he would praise the Lord. If we are saved by the blood of Jesus, no factor like age, disease, suffering or sorrow can prevent us from praising the Lord. We would praise God for by His grace He has adopted us as His children and made us secure in Jesus forever. The psalmist says that he would praise God all his life whatever be the situation. There are times when it is hard to find a reason to praise the Lord. But we are exhorted to be thankful for all things, even the negative things of life. (I Thessalonians 5:18) We can always praise God for His greatness which is revealed in two special ways - the greatness of His power and the greatness of His promises. God’s power is awesome and it is limitless. When we trust Him, His power is imparted to us. His promises are trustworthy and so can always take Him by His Word.
Dear friends, if the Jews could praise the Lord for His grace in returning them to their homeland, how much more we, God’s redeemed people, praise Him for bringing us out of the wrath of our own sins!
PRAYER: Dear Lord, let praises overflow from my heart in all situations. Let not my circumstances dampen my spirit, but let me rise up and lift my voice to praise You, for You have redeemed me. You have shown me mercy. I am Yours forever. I praise You, Lord! Amen.
