Saturday, December 28 || WITH JUST HEAD KNOWLEDGE WE CAN’T ENTER GOD’S KINGDOM

Read: Mark 12: 28-34

“Yet to all who received Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become His children.”

- John 1: 12

A man may go far in religion and yet not be a true disciple of Christ. The teacher of the law in today’s text was evidently a man of more knowledge than most of his equals. To his question: “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?” Jesus replied, “Love the Lord, and love your neighbor,” and the man responded to Jesus in appreciation, saying, “Well said, teacher.” That man saw things which many Pharisees and scribes never saw at all. His words were remarkable in themselves. Verse 34 says, “When Jesus saw that he had answered wisely, He said to him, “You are not far from the Kingdom of God.” But nowhere we are told that this man became one of our Lord’s disciples. We are left to draw the painful conclusion that, like the rich young ruler (Mark 10: 17-25) he could not make up his mind to give up all and follow Christ. In short, though not far from the Kingdom, he probably never entered into it.

Dear friends, people like this teacher of law are not uncommon.  There are many who like Jesus, know much of His teachings, and yet live and die without accepting Him as their Savior and Lord.  Let us beware of resting our hope of salvation on mere intellectual knowledge.  We live in an age where there is a great danger of doing so.  Let us understand that education alone will not make one a Christian.  We must not only know the doctrines of the gospel with our heads, but receive them into our hearts and be guided by them in our lives.  Has the Truth of the gospel that is in our head sunk into our hearts and taken hold of our life?

PRAYER: Dear Lord, I can quote from my memory many Bible verses, am familiar with doctrines of the gospel - but let me not take pride of my head knowledge. Let me allow You to be the Lord of my life and heart. Let me be a true disciple of Christ and Your faithful witness. Amen.
