BRING GOD’S PEACE TO THIS PEACE-DEPRIVED WORLD

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.  I do not give to you as the world gives. ...”

- John 14: 27

The thought of Christmas brings to our mind a peaceful and beautiful scene of a holy night, with shepherds watching, angels singing, and Mary placing the baby in Bethlehem’s stable.  But Christmas is much more than a sentimental remembrance of the birth of the Baby Jesus long ago.  Christmas is about God’s plan for peace on this earth.  There is an ancient legend which says that when the Child of Bethlehem was taken from the manger, no cow or donkey or sheep or goat would eat the hay where he had been cradled.  When the stable boy wondered why this was so, he discovered that the straws of hay had been turned to gold.  Though this is just a legend, this parable tells us that where Christ enters in - in whose hearts He finds room to be born - everything changes and the peace of God which we need so much fills our hearts.

Dear friends, as we live in a world that is at war with itself, where we find peacelessness, hatred and conflicts everywhere, let us as people whose lives are changed by Christ, live as peace-makers. As Paul writes in II Corinthians 5:18-20, God reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation. And He has committed to us the message of reconciliation. Let us be ambassadors of Christ and show the world that we are followers of the Prince of Peace. Let us ask ourselves in this Christmas season, what have we done in the past year to bring God’s peace into the lives of people around us. The Word became flesh not to give us some sentimental recollection of long ago and far away picture of peace, but to give His divine peace amidst everyday challenges of life.

PRAYER:  Dear Lord, let me not have just a sentimental remembrance of Your birth that happened 2000 years ago, but let me be Your ambassador in this broken world, a peace maker  in the place where You have placed me - in my family, community and church.  Fill my heart with divine peace.  Amen.
