Read: Joshua 1: 1-9, 18
FEAR NOT! THE LORD IS WITH YOU!
“When I am afraid, I put my trust in You. ...” (Psalm 56: 3)
In Genesis 26: 17 onwards, we read about the problem that the Israelites faced. When Isaac settled in the valley of Gerar, his servants started digging wells to get fresh water. But as they dug one well after the other, the herdsmen of Gerar quarreled with them and took possession of all the wells they had dug. Finally Isaac had to leave to Beersheba with a question mark about his future. He was afraid. But that night the Lord appeared to Isaac and comforted him and said, “Do not be afraid, for I AM WITH YOU. I will bless you.”
Meanwhile, those men who were hostile to Isaac and chased him away came in search of him saying, “We saw clearly that the Lord was with you.” They even made a treaty of peace with him. How true the Lord was to Isaac! He was with him and exalted him above his enemies and made him prosperous. Next we read of the problem that Joshua faced. Moses the leader, was dead, and Joshua had to lead the rebellious, disobedient Israelites to the land of Canaan. After Moses’ death, knowing the fears of Joshua well, the Lord strengthened him saying, “Be strong and courageous” - not once but four times in the first chapter alone. (v. 6, 7, 9, 18) He said to Joshua, “I WILL BE WITH YOU. I will never leave you nor forsake you.” What an encouraging promise!
Dear friends, when we realize that the Lord is with us always – even in times of trouble – we will not be afraid. When Jesus told His disciples that He will be leaving them shortly, they were afraid. But Jesus promised them, the Holy Spirit, the Counselor will be with them always. So let us be encouraged. The presence of the Lord is always with us. The Lord is our light. He is our salvation. He is the stronghold of our lives. Whom shall we fear? (Ps 27: 1) He is with us always, to the very end of the age. (Matthew 28: 20) Let us trust in Him. He will never fail us at any cost. Amen.PRAYER: Dear God, how greatly I am comforted because You are always with me. I will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys in the midday, because You are my God and in You I trust. Amen.
