GET RID OF THE IDOLS! GIVE GLORY TO GOD ALONE!

“... I looked, and in the entrance north of the gate of the altar I saw the idol of jealousy.”

- Ezekiel 8: 5

Manasseh, one of the evil kings in Israel’s history, who lived 1000 years earlier than Ezekiel, had set the carved image of Asherah that he had made in the house of the Lord, of which the Lord said to David and his son Solomon, “In this temple and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, I will put my Name forever.” (II Kings 21:7)  This image was subsequently destroyed by Josiah as recorded in II Kings 23:6, “ He took the Asherah pole from the temple of the Lord to the Kidron Valley outside Jerusalem and burned it there. He ground it to powder and scattered the dust ...”  God commanded Israel, “You shall not bow down to them (an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in  the water under the earth) for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God.” (Exodus 20:5)  Israel was instructed, “Do not worship any other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.” (Exodus 34:14)  Here, His name Jealous means, Jehovah-Qanna.  It emphasizes that God will not tolerate a divided loyalty in those who claim to be “His possessions.”  We must honor Him with our lives - our behavior and conduct, as the one true God and not just give Him “lip service.”

Dear friends, let us be careful not to give glory to any idol in our life.  We may not literally fall down before a carved image and worship it, but we may have “sophisticated idols” in our heart and life.  The dictionary defines idol as “any person or thing regarded with blind admiration, adoration or devotion.”  What do we regard with great devotion in our life - a successful career, education, fame, and name, or a luxurious lifestyle?  Let us ask ourselves, “If this is taken away, would I still love the Lord and follow Him faithfully?”

PRAYER: Dear Lord, let me be careful not to make an idol and worship it. Let me not give glory to any other being.  Let me not esteem pleasure of life, money or education very high, and let them not draw my attention from You.  For You are a jealous God and  I am Your treasured possession.  Amen.
