Monday, January 20 || BETHEL – THE HOUSE OF GOD

Read : Genesis 28: 10-22

"When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, “Surely the Lord is in this place, ...”  (Genesis 28:16)

After receiving his father Isaac’s blessing deceitfully, Jacob ran away from his house and stopped at a certain place for the night. For the first time he was beginning to discover God for himself. Left all alone, he fell asleep, and he had a vision - the vision of a ladder – a stairway reaching from earth to heaven and angels walking up and down on the ladder. God Himself was in direct communication with Jacob.

Dear friends, may I ask you, have you discovered God for yourself? Perhaps you were brought up in a Christian home. But, have you personally met the God? Have you come to know personally the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob? This vision meant three things to Jacob. First, access to God. Second, the promise of conversing with God. Third, was the most wonderful of all that Jacob felt approved by God. His conscience must have hurt him for having done a deceitful act. But he was relieved to know that the Lord had not forsaken him totally. Jacob named that ‘certain place’ as Bethel.

Bethel means ‘house of God.’ That place wasn’t something merely sentimental, it meant everything to him and he wanted to commemorate Bethel. He set up a pillar and poured oil on top of it and made a twofold vow – one, that the Lord would be his God, and second, he would give Him a tenth of all he received from Him. Do you have a Bethel - a place to meet your God personally? Do you acknowledge Him as your Lord there and show your gratitude to Him? How wonderful it would be if in this New Year we would make a vow that we would honor the Lord more with all our life.

PRAYER:  Heavenly Father, thank You for giving me Your full armor to fight against the enemy – Satan. Help me to put on the full armor, piece by piece and be alert always. When the devil attacks me, let me defeat him by being strong in You and in Your mighty power. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
