Read: Psalm 90: 1-12
“Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” - Psalm 90: 12
This psalm begins with the great affirmation concerning the relationship of man to God. Addressing Him as Adonai, the Sovereign Lord, Moses the writer of this psalm declares that generations before anything existed God was there. From eternity past to through eternity future, He exists, independent of all His creation. Having introduced the idea of God’s eternal being, living outside of time with no beginning or end, Moses says that for this eternal God, a thousand years which to a man seems so long, are dwindled to nothing, in comparison to the eternity of His being. Moses then compares the eternal nature of God with the frail nature of man and the futility of life. Our lives are short. The psalmist says that we might make it to 70 or 80, though some make it longer. And the important prayer we need to pray is, “Lord, teach us to number our days aright.” In this prayer we see humility; we need God to show us how to do this, we need His help! Such a request is vital for us so that we might avoid being arrogant, and be careful not to make plans that overlook God’s ownership over our lives.
Dear friends, as we are about to step into a New Year, let us examine ourselves. Let us keep this truth in our mind and live differently in the coming year. This knowledge would help us gain a heart of wisdom and we would be quick to forgive, more bold in proclaiming the gospel, more generous in our giving. We would not crave for self-importance and not have selfish ambitions, but be willing to take up our Cross and in love serve others.
PRAYER: Dear Lord, thank You for Your grace that helped me to complete this year. As I am about to enter the new year, I pray that You teach me to number my days aright. Let me not be arrogant, or self-centered, let me trust You and serve You with wholehearted devotion. Let me surrender my whole self to Your reign every moment. Amen.
