"God is our refuge and strength, an ever present help in trouble." - Psalm 46:1
The Lord, after commanding Moses to set forth the boundaries for all the tribes of Israel in Canaan, asked him to allot six cities called "cities of refuge." These were meant to give protection to the people who had killed someone unintentionally. They were "places of refuge from the avenger, so that a person accused of murder may not die before he stands trial before the assembly." (Numbers 35: 12) From this passage we can understand how caring the Lord was. For example, suppose the axe a man was using to cut the branches of a tree slipped accidently and fell on another man standing near the tree and killed him, the kith and kin of the dead man, in a fit of rage, may take revenge on the man who had been the reason for the death. If this man ran to one of the cities of refuge, he would be safe, as the law of the Lord stated that no one who had entered the city of refuge should be punished till the day of trial.
Dear friends, today there is no need for us to run in search of cities of refuge for our protection because the Lord Himself is our shield, fortress and refuge. But this promise is only for those who fulfil the conditions mentioned in Isaiah 33: 15, 16, "He who walks righteously and speaks what is right, who rejects gain from extortion and keeps his hand from accepting bribes, who stops his ears against plans of murder and shuts his eyes against contemplating evil - this is the man whose refuge will be the mountain fortress." Without any doubt, God will be the refuge of such a man and He will supply his bread and water. (v. 16) He will be a strong fortress around him and protect him from the enemy’s attack.PRAYER: Heavenly Father, I am greatly encouraged that You are my refuge and I can run to You for protection at any time and at any hour. Help me to please You by obeying Your commands so that I will never fail to enjoy the protection offered by You. Amen.
