“For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. ...” - I Timothy 6: 10
When a rich young man came to Jesus and asked Him, “Good master, what must I do to win eternal life?” Jesus said, “Go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, ...” At these words the young man’s face fell and he went away with a heavy heart. I believe Jesus too must have had a heavy heart watching him go because He loved him dearly. Jesus then said to the disciples, “How hard it is for the wealthy to enter the Kingdom of God.” This astonished the disciples. As they saw the situation, the rich had a better chance of entering the Kingdom of God, for they had the time to attend religious festivals when the vast majority of the people had to be working. They could also donate a lot of money to the temple and earn the name of being a public benefactor. Therefore when Jesus said their entry was a virtual impossibility, they were confused.
Dear friends, money is not wicked in itself. Life cannot continue without money. But it should not dictate us. Entry to the Kingdom of God depends upon the heart, not the pocket. Riches can corrupt the heart very easily and can make us proud, arrogant and haughty. Entry to the Kingdom of God requires humility. We have to stoop to go through the gate, perhaps even crawl! So let us not allow money to become our predominant concern, but let us live a content life with what we have been provided by the Lord.
PRAYER: Almighty God, how much Your heart would have ached to see the rich young man refusing to enter into the Kingdom of God because of his love for his possessions! Let me be careful not to forsake You for the cheap pleasures and riches of this world which are but temporary. Amen.
