Read: John 6: 16-21
“But He said to them, “It is I; don’t be afraid.” - John 6: 20
The storm mentioned in today’s text was no accident. It started when the disciples got out into the middle of the lake and ended when Jesus got into the boat with the disciples. It was there for a purpose and when that purpose was accomplished, the storm stopped. We may wonder why Jesus came to the disciples in the boat, walking on the water. He did so to teach something - to prove that He can always do the impossible. But the disciples were terrified. How feeble was their faith! Even after watching Jesus miraculously feed over five thousand people, they could still not take the final step of faith and believe that He was God’s Son. But we see the Lord’s tenderness for His disciples’ feelings beautifully here. No sooner did He see that they are afraid, than He proceeded to calm them. He assured them that the figure they saw walking on the deep was no ghost or an enemy of dread. It was their own beloved Master. “It is I; don’t be afraid,” were His encouraging words to them.
Dear friends, we often face spiritual and emotional storms and feel helpless, terrified and tossed about like a small boat on a big lake. Let us not forget that Jesus who walked on the water is able to work in our lives and make the impossible, possible. The Sovereign God sends storms to perfect and strengthen our faith. In spite of the terrifying circumstances, if we trust our lives to Christ for His safekeeping, He will give us peace in any storm. PRAYER: Dear Lord, when I face storms in my life let me not be terrified but focus on You, the Lord who can do the impossible . You can change any hardest situation in my life and restore peace. Help me to hear Your reassuring voice, trust You fully and walk confidently. Amen.
