Friday, February 14 || COMMISSIONING OF GOD’S MESSENGERS

Read : Matthew 10: 1-4

“He called His twelve disciples to Him and gave them authority to drive out evil spirit and to heal every disease. ...” - Matthew 10: 1

Jesus prepared the twelve disciples by a slow and gradual process for their great and important life-work.  First they were disciples (a disciple is basically a student of a teacher), and afterwards they were teachers of others.     Jesus called them and gave them power to do what He Himself did - to cast away demons and heal every disease.  Matthew 10:1 is Jesus’ official commissioning of the twelve men He handpicked to serve beside Him during His earthly ministry.  This is not a call to salvation but to service.  But in between salvation and service there must be a time of training and preparation.  For the disciples it was a period of three years in which Jesus Himself trained them as they experienced life together day by day.  That is the best form of discipleship.

Dear friends, we learn two things from this passage - before our Savior commissions someone to  do great work of proclaiming Him, He calls them first to be His disciple, and trains them.  We cannot effectively be His disciples in this world unless we have first spent time in “the School of Christ” - sitting at His feet, getting to know Him and learning from Him.  The second thing is the endowment of power.  We cannot claim divine power to ourselves.  It is ours only if given to us by Him for His purpose.  Without Him we can do nothing (John 15:5) but we can do “all things” through Christ who strengthens us.  (Philippians 4:13)  Let us come to Jesus that we may be clothed with His authority and girded with His strength.   Thereafter let us go into the world and manifest His deeds among the people.

PRAYER:  Dear Lord, You chose me before the creation of the world and saved me by the blood of Jesus.  I am equipped and empowered by You to be Your messenger to this fallen world.  Let me be girded with Your strength and Your power every moment and live as Your witness.  Amen.
