Friday, April 11 || JESUS’ PRESCRIPTION TO GIVING

Read : Matthew 6: 1-4
“But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.”- Matthew 6: 3
A true believer must ever be on guard against hypocrisy. Jesus, in the first verse, issues two warnings - The first is, “Beware of practicing your righteousness before men to be noticed by them.” Here the Lord says that righteousness which is done for the sake of getting approval of other people, is not the kingdom righteousness which He wants to cultivate in His disciples. He wants to see a different kind of righteousness which cares more about what God thinks, than what people think. Secondly, in the second half of the verse, Jesus warns, “If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.” Notice that He does not say that they will receive less heavenly reward, but He says that they will receive no reward at all. Why? Because they are strangers to the grace of God.
In the next verse, Jesus says that believers should cultivate a genuine spirit of charity. He says, “When you give to the poor, do not make it public so as to be honored or appreciated by people.” Jesus says that if we give to hear the applause of others and that if we enjoy such applause, that is all the reward we will receive. There will be no reward in heaven for us. Instead, our giving is to be hidden even from ourselves. “Keep the thing so secret that even you yourself are hardly aware that you are doing anything all praiseworthy.”
Dear friends, the eyes of the Lord is upon us and He sees not only the act we do in secret but also our motive. So let us be careful to do good deeds whatever it is, to the glory of God.
PRAYER: Dear Lord, when I give, let me not announce to others publicly and expect them to applaud me for my generosity. Let me give with a right motive of pleasing You and gaining Your approval so that I would receive a great reward from You in heaven. Amen.
