Verse: " Some trust in Chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our god." (Psalm 20 : 7)
When the Philippians jailor asked Paul and Silas the question, "What must we do to be saved?" they replied, "Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved." What does it mean to believe? The New English Bible says, "Put your trust in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved." Actually the word "believe" is related with the "head" - the "intellect;" it is a mental process. But the word "trust" is connected to the "heart." It excludes our efforts, and requires action. Oswald J Smith explains this beautifully with the following illustration: An eleven hundred foot tightrope was stretched from bank to bank across the mighty cataract of Niagara. Balancing his 40 pound pole, Charles Blondin, the world's greatest tightrope walker, walked across it and triumphantly placed his foot on the farther bank. Looking at the crowd, he offered to recross the cataract with a man on his back. "Do you believe I am able to carry you across?" the rope walker asked a man. "No. I certainly cannot risk my life like you do," and he turns away. "And what about you?" he asks Henry Colcord, his manager. "I believe, in fact I have no doubt about it at all." The 38 foot pole was balanced and they started to move along. As they were nearing the other side, some gambler cut the line, and the rope swayed fearfully. Blondin told Colcord Henry, "You are no longer Colcord; you are now Blondin. Be a part of me. If I sway, sway with me. Do not try to balance or we will both be dead." Colcord obeyed Blondin's words, and at last both of them reached the land as the spectators went wild with excitement. That is trust!
Dear friends, you may believe that Jesus can carry you to heaven but until you take the first step and commit yourself to Him, you can never reach the other shore. Don't just believe. Trust.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, let me not merely believe in my head that Your son Jesus came to save me, but let me trust Him with all my heart. Help me to cast my everything on Him and cling to Him and reach the other shore safely. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
